What is the Indian Premier League?
The Indian Premier League is India's top professional T20 cricket competition, founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007 with the first season played in 2008. The tournament launched with eight franchises and has operated in its current 10-team format since 2022, when Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined the league. Each season, the 10 city-based franchises compete for the IPL trophy.
The tournament follows a double round-robin league stage, where each franchise plays the other nine twice - once at home and once away - for a total of 14 league matches per team. The top four teams advance to the playoffs.
Matches are played in the T20 format: 20 overs per side, four fielding restrictions, tactical timeouts and, since 2023, the Impact Player substitution rule (covered below). A typical IPL season spans late March to late May, though dates shift year to year depending on the international cricket calendar. IPL 2026 runs from 28th March with the Final scheduled for 31st May 2026.
The IPL's governing authority is the BCCI. Commercial operations are run by IPL Governing Council. The title sponsor and broadcast rights change with each season; for IPL 2026, the title sponsor is TATA. Broadcast rights in India are held by Star Sports.
How does the IPL tournament format work?
The IPL runs in two phases: a 70-match league stage where 10 teams are split into two groups (these groups are purely for schedule determination, they are not the points table groups) and each plays 14 matches, followed by a four-team playoff - Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the Final - to determine the champion.
Since 2022, the 10 teams have been split into two groups of five, ranked by historical IPL title wins. Each team plays a mix of home-and-away fixtures against teams in both groups, with the exact intra- and inter-group balance set by the IPL Governing Council ahead of each season. The total is always 14 matches per team and 70 league matches in total.

IPL playoff structure
The playoff format gives the top two league-stage teams a second chance: losing Qualifier 1 only drops a team to Qualifier 2, which rewards consistent league-stage performance and is a key factor in pre-tournament outright-winner odds.

What is the Impact Player rule?
The Impact Player rule, introduced in IPL 2023, allows each team to substitute one of four nominated bench players into the match at any point between overs. The substituted player is permanently replaced - they cannot re-enter the match.
The rule has meaningfully affected scoring patterns. The average first-innings score rose from 171.1 runs in IPL 2022 to 183.4 in IPL 2023, a 12-run jump in the rule's first season. Across the full pre-rule era (2008–2022) compared to the post-rule period (2023–2025), the league-wide run rate has climbed from 7.86 to 8.89 per over (+13.1%), and the share of innings producing 180+ totals has more than doubled from 21.4% to 47.2%. For betting markets, this has pushed over/under totals upward from 175 to 185-190 runs and reshaped team-total prop lines across the competition.
IPL 2026 Season - Schedule and Defending Champion
IPL 2026 runs from 28 March to 31 May, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru defending their first-ever title as the 2025 champions. Ten franchises contest 74 matches across 13 venues, opening with RCB vs Sunrisers Hyderabad on 28 March and closing at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Two franchises from the original 2008 edition have been renamed or replaced over time: Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced the original Deccan Chargers (2008–2012) after the franchise was terminated. The Pune Warriors (2011–2013) and Kochi Tuskers Kerala (2011 only) both exited the league. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined in 2022 as the ninth and tenth franchises.
