France and Morocco renew their rivalry in a blockbuster quarter-final, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final. Les Bleus will be aiming for a sixth straight World Cup victory and a third consecutive appearance in the last four. 

Morocco, however, have once again defied the odds despite an injury-hit squad and will be dreaming of back-to-back semi-final berths after a convincing Round of 16 win over co-hosts Canada.

France booked their place in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay, although the manner of the victory was far from expected. 

Having scored at least three goals in each of their previous five World Cup matches, Les Bleus were forced to grind it out, with Kylian Mbappé finally breaking the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Désiré Doué won the decisive foul.

Paraguay's physical, defence-first approach frustrated France for long spells, facing  29 tackles and restricting the favourites to an xG of just 0.13 in the first half, during which they failed to register a shot for the opening 20 minutes. 

However, Didier Deschamps' tactical changes after the break lifted France's attacking output (1.33 xG), and Mbappé's penalty ultimately proved enough. The victory also extended France's unbeaten run against South American opposition in World Cups to 11 matches in regulation time (W7 D4).

Key Players 

Kylian Mbappé may not have been as prolific as expected, but he still delivered when France needed him most, calmly converting a nervy penalty to score his seventh goal of the tournament. 

That strike also took his World Cup knockout tally to 11, underlining just how vital he is to this French side. Ousmane Dembélé, with four goals, and Michael Olise, with five assists, remain the other standout attacking threats.

Team News 

France are set to remain without Aurélien Tchouaméni, with the midfielder reportedly still not ready to return after missing the Paraguay clash. 

There is better news on Marcus Thuram, however, as the forward is closing in on a comeback after being sidelined by a calf injury in the Round of 32 and Round of 16.

Elsewhere, Morocco booked a second consecutive World Cup quarterfinal with a 3-0 victory over Canada, but the scoreline hardly reflected the contest. 

The Atlas Lions were far from their fluent best, managing just four shots on target and an xG of 0.82, while Canada's relentless counter-press caused them plenty of problems. 

Yet, as strong teams often do, Morocco found a way through. Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock early in the second half before adding another to put the game beyond reach, with Soufiane Rahimi sealing the win late on. It was also a fiercely contested affair, producing a tournament-high 38 fouls and eight cards. 

The only sour note for Morocco was the injury to leading scorer Ismael Saibari, who limped off in the 22nd minute, leaving a major fitness concern ahead of their quarterfinal clash with France.

Key Players 

Assuming Ismael Saibari is unavailable, Morocco will look to their experienced stars, Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz, to shoulder the creative burden. 

Hakimi continued his impressive campaign with an assist against Canada—his third of the tournament—moving him into second place for the most assists by a defender in a single World Cup. 

Brahim Diaz was equally influential, setting up two goals to take his tally to four assists, the most ever recorded by an African player in a FIFA World Cup.

Morocco are sweating over the fitness of Ismael Saibari after he picked up an injury in the Round of 16. Should he fail to recover in time, Soufiane Rahimi is expected to keep his place in the starting XI.

France will start as slight favourites, but this promises to be anything but straightforward. Morocco have already gone toe-to-toe with heavyweights like Brazil and the Netherlands without tasting defeat, proving they belong on this stage. 

That experience against elite opposition could work in their favour, especially against a French side that has historically found African opponents difficult, holding only a narrow 4-3 win-loss record against them at the World Cup. 

However, France's exceptional attacking depth and ability to change games in an instant, coupled with Morocco's injury concerns, give Les Bleus the edge to book their place in the final.

Not surprisingly, France  are favorites to win the match according to bookmakers, with one of the sites backing them to win at odds of 1.56  to Morocco’s 6.00 and 3.90 for a draw.
