West Indies A take on England Lions in the first unofficial T20I of the tour at Conaree Sports Club in Basseterre, St Kitts. West Indies A are led in the T20 leg by Alick Athanaze, who anchors a squad blended with explosive youngsters and experienced domestic performers. The England Lions arrive with an exciting group captained by Thomas Rew, aiming to adapt swiftly to the Caribbean conditions and showcase their red-ball and white-ball credentials.
With both teams still settling into the series, the contest could come down to how quickly each side adapts to local conditions.
West Indies A have named a squad that mixes senior players with emerging talent. Alick Athanaze captains the side and has the most international experience in the T20 group. Vitel Lawes, Jewel Andrew, Quentin Sampson and Kamil Pooran have all been part of the senior squad. That experience should help them in a format where powerplay and death-over decisions matter.
Kamil Pooran is the standout batter of this side. He scored 273 runs in eight CPL 2026 matches at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 159.65, with a highest score of 81. Quentin Sampson has been just as dangerous at the finish. He scored 141 runs at a strike rate of 185.52 in CPL 2026, hitting 14 sixes off 76 balls. Jewel Andrew adds depth at the top, having scored 58 off 42 in a CPL match for Saint Lucia Kings.
The bowling is less proven. Vitel Lawes, a left-arm wrist spinner, took 10 wickets in 13 CPL 2026 matches at an average of 37.80. Joshua James took 3/18 in a CPL win for Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, and his control with the new ball could be important against a Lions side full of strokemakers.
West Indies A have power in the batting and variety in the attack, but the average numbers suggest their bowlers will need to improve on franchise form. They have also been together only briefly, so cohesion will be a question early in the series.
Players to watch: Kamil Pooran, Quentin Sampson, Jewel Andrew and Vitel Lawes.

England Lions are led by one of the youngest captains the side has had. Thomas Rew, who leads the Lions’ T20 team, is a wicketkeeper-batter from Somerset, and his captaincy follows his success leading England Under-19s to the World Cup final earlier this year. He is also in the senior squad for the T20 series in Australia, so this may be his only Lions T20 for a while.
Rew's batting has already shown promise. He made his maiden T20 fifty, 57 off 30 balls, against Northamptonshire in July, and he and James Rew shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 52 in Somerset’s opening win this year, with James scoring 47 off 29. James finished with 430 runs in 12 games at an average of 43 and a strike rate of 152.48, with a century. Jack Haynes was also consistent, scoring 401 runs in 14 matches for Nottinghamshire at 137.33.
The bowling attack has Blast form to back it up. Scott Currie took 26 wickets at an average of 16.04, while Calvin Harrison took 22 at 15.27, with one five-wicket haul. Harrison also had an economy rate of 6.76. Rehan Ahmed adds international experience with his leg spin, and Liam Patterson-White and Ben McKinney provide further options.
England Lions have the more settled bowling plan, and their batters have shown they can score quickly. The challenge is the unfamiliar conditions and a captain who is still learning the role, which makes the first game a useful test of how quickly the side can adapt.
Players to watch: Thomas Rew, James Rew, Scott Currie and Calvin Harrison.

Basseterre is forecast to be warm on Sunday, with a high of about 30°C and a low of about 28°C. There is a 15% chance of rain, so a full match looks likely, although a shower could affect the start or the second innings.
Conaree Sports Club is a cricket ground in Basseterre that has hosted local and domestic West Indies competitions since 2007. It has no recorded T20I or CPL history, so scores here are hard to predict. Warner Park, the main venue on the island, is the nearest guide: CPL first-innings scores average around 166 there. A total of 160 to 170 should be competitive at Conaree, but this is an estimate and not a ground record.
The ground is used for domestic cricket, so the surface could offer more help to bowlers early on than Warner Park does. Teams that adapt quickly to the pace and bounce will have an advantage.
Conaree Sports Club has little T20 history, so the decision may depend on how the surface looks on the day. Teams often prefer to chase in Caribbean daytime games, and at nearby Warner Park, chasing sides have won 43 of 80 CPL matches, so fielding first looks the more likely choice for whoever wins the toss.
West Indies A look slightly better placed for this opener. They have more T20 experience in their top order, and Pooran and Sampson both scored quickly in the CPL. They also know the conditions, which should help early in the series.
England Lions have the quality to compete, particularly through Currie and Harrison, whose Blast wicket tallies stand out. However, they are a young side in a new environment, and Thomas Rew will be captaining in this format for the first time.
West Indies A’s batting power and familiarity with the conditions give them the edge. England Lions could turn the game if Currie and Harrison take early wickets and the Rew brothers lay a platform, but the hosts look the more reliable side.
We are backing West Indies A to win this first unofficial T20I.
