With the T20I series now behind them, India and New Zealand will turn their attention to the first ODI. The opening game is scheduled to be played at Eden Park, Auckland, on 4th November from 7:30 am IST. India will look to start the three-match series on a strong note after letting a 3-0 lead slip to 3-2 in the T20Is, while New Zealand will aim to carry the momentum from their late fightback into the ODI format and begin the series with another win.
New Zealand have won three of their last four ODIs and will take confidence from their 2-1 series win over India earlier this year. Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer in that series, scoring 352 runs in three ODIs, including two centuries. New Zealand also have a strong home record against India, winning 26 of their 45 ODIs played at home. Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra have been ruled out for New Zealand. Henry Nicholls, who made 119 in the Ford Trophy on Saturday, has been added to the squad.
Indian team has struggled to show consistency in results despite some outstanding individual performances. They have 7 wins and 5 losses in 12 ODIS played this year. Skipper Shubman Gill has 895 runs in these ODIS at an average of 111. He has gone past 50 in 8 of these innings (3 centuries). Virat Kohli, Gill, and Rohit Sharma have returned after the last ODI series against the West Indies.

New Zealand last played the ODI back in July against West Indies. They won the 5-match ODI Series 3-2. Will Young was their leading run-scorer with 176 runs, while Jayden Lennox ruled the wicket charts with 14 wickets. Young will open the innings with Henry Nicholls. Young has 356 runs while Nicholls has 235 runs in 11 games played this year. The duo collectively average 32 against India and have never scored a century. Nick Kelly will come in at number three. Kelly has 216 runs in the last 5 ODIs at an average of 43 with 3 half-centuries.
Daryl Mitchell will be the man India need to keep quiet, having smashed 352 runs in three ODIs against them earlier this year, including two centuries and an 84. He will come in the middle with Tom Latham, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner. Mitchell has 473 runs in the last 6 ODIs at an average of 94 with 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries. He will be the batter to watch out for. Latham has scored 200 runs in 8 ODIS played this year. Bracewell might get replaced by Glenn Phillips after he finished the T20Is as the leading run-scorer with 341 runs (1 century and 3 half-centuries in 5 games).
Mitchell Santner will lead the bowling attack, supported by Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, and Jacob Duffy. Santner has 6 wickets in the last 5 ODIs. Against India, his average is 56, though. Jamieson has picked up 6 wickets in the last 3 ODIs. Against India, he has taken 11 wickets in 7 ODIs at an average of 29. He can be the bowler to watch out for. Duffy and Smith have 12 wickets in 7 ODIs played this year.
Key Players: Daryl Mitchell. Nick Kelly, Kyle Jamieson.
Mitchell Santner (capt), Michael Bracewell, Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Will Young, Blair Tickner
India is coming in the series after a 2-1 win over West Indies at home. In all three ODIs, India scored 300-plus runs thrice and 400-plus runs once. In the second ODI, they chased 406 runs in 44th over with 8 wickets in hand, all credit to skipper Shubman Gill, who scored a double century. Kuldeep Yadav finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with 7 wickets.
India will be happy to see their top 4 returning back to the squad. Rohit Sharma will open the innings with Gill. Sharma has 604 runs in 12 ODIs played this year with 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries. On the other hand, Gill has 895 runs in 11 innings played this year at an average of 111.87 with 3 centuries and 5 half-centuries. Virat Kohli will come in at number three. In the last 13 ODIs, Kohli has 928 runs at an average of 93 with 4 centuries and 4 half-centuries. He will be the batter to watch out for. In New Zealand, he has 596 runs in 13 games at an average of 50.
KL Rahul will come in the middle with Shreyas Iyer, Naman Dhir and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Rahul has 323 runs in 8 innings played here at an average of 80.75. Dhir played just 1 ODI in the last series, scoring 30 runs. It will be interesting to see if India can accommodate Ishan Kishan in the middle. He has 174 runs in 4 innings played in 2026 at a strike rate of 143.
Gurnoor Brar will lead the bowling attack with Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj and Arshdeep Singh. Brar has 14 wickets in 9 ODIs. Yadav has 10 wickets in 7 ODIs played this year with an economy of 6 - the lowest among all. Singh has 8 wickets in 4 games at an average of 26 - the lowest among all. The only issue with the Indian bowling attack is their inexperience playing in New Zealand.
Key Players: Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma.

The weather in Auckland is expected to be sunny on match days, with temperatures ranging from 1`7 to 21 degrees Celsius. Winds will blow from the southeast at 6-10 km/h. It is a batting-friendly pitch in the first innings.
The match will be played at Eden Park, Auckland, on 4th November. The venue has hosted 86 ODIs, with the average first-innings score standing is 222, 18 more than the second innings. New Zeland has 6 wins and 3 losses against India in 10 ODIs played at this venue.
Across 86 ODIS, teams bowling first have won 47 matches, while teams batting first have won 34. The team winning the toss should bat first. New Zealand had chased 340 runs at this venue against Australia. Surprisingly, they had won against India in the last ODI at this venue while chasing 307.
India will be desperate to beat New Zealand in ODIs after losing the ODI Series at home. The Indian top four have averages above 50 and a strike rate above 115 in ODIs played this year. India have scored 300-plus in each of their last 4 ODIs, including the 405-run chase against West Indies. But they have lost 2 of these games. If New Zealand has to win, they have to exploit the Indian bowling attack.
Chasing is preferred on this ground. And the Chasemaster (Kohli) has an average of 90 in wins while chasing the target.
We predict that India will beat New Zealand.
