Dallas is coming off a horrendous showing against the Spurs, getting outplayed 92-125 in what turned out to be a shocker for every Mavs fan who thronged American Airlines Center for opening night, confident of a win. 

San Antonio turned the lights out quickly, on what was to be Cooper Flagg’s big coming out party, dealing a heavy blow to their rivals. Dallas lost 3 of the 4 quarters offensively, scoring just 92 points. Anthony Davis was the lone shining light for the Mavericks, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds. 

San Antonio went on a 11-0 run in the 3rd quarter to stretch their lead by 22 points, taking the game by the scruff of the neck. There was no resistance from the Mavs on the defensive end with the Spurs players having a free path to the basket on layups, finger rolls, dunks and hooks. Dallas was left clueless, conceding a mammoth 68 paint points.

Jason Kidd watched on in horror as his team disintegrated right in front of his eyes. It was a punch to the stomach and the Mavericks will have to tighten up defensively if they are to make any headway this season.

The Washington Wizards are without Jordan Poole, their top scorer from last season, after he was traded this July to the New Orleans Pelicans. Veteran CJ McCollum has been tasked with point guard duties. 

The Wizards began opening night at Fiserv Forum. It was a high scoring affair with the Bucks winning without breaking a sweat, 133-120. Khris Middleton, on his return to Milwaukee where he won a championship, was the top scorer for Washington ending with 23 points.The other Wizard to breach the 20-point mark was Kyshawn George who had 21 points.

Washington gave up 60 points in the paint and were also guilty of not having active hands on the defensive end, allowing the Bucks to go for 31 assists. A clear sign that defense needs to be prioritized for the Wizards to have a winning season, let alone making the playoffs.

Washington, themselves, are looking for answers following their loss to Milwaukee. Khris Middleton, with his championship pedigree, will be expected to step up both as a scorer and distributor.

Both teams need to drastically improve defensively. The Mavs cannot afford any more slip ups, even though it is only the early part of the season, particularly after what happened on Wednesday night.
